When applying the white, use a dabbing motion rather than swipe the sponge. It doesn't have to be a flat matt white, just paler than skin tone. Fill in any gaps at the end.

To achieve a better look, make sure to sponge some white above the collar line all around the face and neck and all round the ears too.
