This year I had the pleasure of working with a fantastic crew for the hallowe'en promo video for An Púcán pub in Galway city centre.
After being given the brief and ordering the materials I got to work on five of the creepiest characters I've created so far.
With the release of the new Stephen King's ' IT ' the previous week, clowns were 'in' and the freakier the better.
I ordered my SFX materials from Bently Advanced Materials.
They arrived in about 4 working days.
Mr Smiles
I was insdpired by the harlequinn clown aesthetic so I sculpted and molded diamond shaped rips and a subtle 'Chelsea Smile' for this look. I pieced it together with a really far back wig and a high contrast facepaint and bloody bits.

Mr Burnside
The director had one request for an idea: half a face full of burns. Inspired by twoface and the contrasting ideas of the grotesque and the hyper accented feartures of a clown I got to work layering latex and tissue, pait and blood for this look.

Another thing I wanted to try was to make 'squeezable' pustules. I layered up latex, styrofoam, droplets from the hot glue gun and home made goo-filled domes. Unfortunately over the couple days between molding and shooting, the 'pus' hardened up. Next time I'll be one step closer to a poppable zit.

Bubbles the Bartender

The Holey Bouncer
I discovered a couple years ago that I have an irrational repulsion towards clusters of holes. They would pop up in nightmares and I'd be itching the next day all over at the memories. This just so happens to be called "Trypophobia" and is a legitimate phobia. So of course, in full knowledge of how squeamish it made me feel, I set out to create a look based on my fears.
I was so creeped out applying the paint to the actors' face it took me twice as long as I experienced chills and itches constantly running down my spine.

Elvis
Elvis was to be "Nil By Mouth", a stark contrast to the lifestyle the iconic legend led. I layered up latex and textures and bits of twine to create this look. This was the last look of the night and after 5 hours of working I was too tired to do much more. I'll just need another opportunity to work with a dead Elvis to expand the idea.
